Alternative Wedding Favours: Why Live Illustration Beats the Rest
Live wedding illustration is exactly what it sounds like - I draw your guests, live, throughout your wedding day.
Bold, colourful portraits, illustrated on my iPad and printed on the spot. Every guest leaves with something made specifically for them. It’s a favour that's personal, a keepsake that's genuinely worth keeping, a small piece of the day they'll still have in ten years.
This isn't for every wedding. It's for the ones with personality. The couples who looked at the standard supplier list and thought - is this really us? If that's you, keep reading.
So what actually happens on the day?
I arrive about an hour before your guests, get set up with my iPad and a printer, in a spot that's visible but not in the way. When guests start arriving I introduce myself, take a quick reference photos, and get illustrating.
Each single portrait takes around 8 to 9 minutes, couples take about 15 and small groups a little longer. By the time your ceremony is done and your enjoying your wedding breakfast, I've got a growing pile of finished illustrations ready to be collected.
Guests take their illustration home the same day. The following morning you get a full digital gallery of everything I completed - every single portrait, ready to download and keep.
The whole thing runs quietly in the background. No schedule to manage, no guests being rounded up for their turn, no disruption to the flow of your day. It just happens, and people love it.
Why it works for alternative weddings
Here's the thing about my live illustration. It suits certain weddings brilliantly and others not at all.
It works best when a couple has thought carefully about how their day is going to feel, not just how it's going to look. When the guest list is full of people who show up as themselves. When the details matter, not because everything has to be perfect, but because everything has been chosen on purpose. It is meaningful.
It works for the couples who looked at the standard wedding supplier list and quietly thought - is this really us?
It doesn't matter whether you're getting married in a brewery or a barn, a castle or a city centre venue. What matters is that it's your wedding and it looks and feels like you.
A note on accessibility
Weddings are wonderful and weddings are also, let's be honest, a lot. A loud room full of people, unexpected schedules, being asked to perform and socialise for hours on end. For neurodivergent people (or anyone who finds busy social environments a bit much) they can be really overwhelming.
Live illustration works quietly. There's no announcement, no being called up in front of everyone, no pressure to participate in any particular way. Guests come over when they feel like it (if they want to). I take a quick reference photo, they go back to their drink, and their illustration is ready whenever they want to collect it.
Nobody is put on the spot. Nobody has to interact with me for longer than they want to. And if a guest would rather not be involved at all, that's completely fine, I'll never make that feel awkward or noticeable.
I also try to make the booking process itself as accessible as possible. Some people want a quick call while others want everything in writing so they can take their time with it. Both work equally well for me - just let me know what suits you.
If you have specific access requirements, or anything about the day you'd like me to be aware of in advance then please do let me know.
What do the illustrations actually look like?
Bold, colourful, and faceless - which sounds strange until you see them.
The faceless approach is a deliberate style choice. Rather than trying to capture a likeness in 8 minutes, the illustrations focus on the figure - the silhouette, the outfit, the energy of how someone stands. The result is something that feels like fashion illustration meets wedding keepsake. People recognise themselves immediately, and they want to put it on their wall as soon as they get home.
I work digitally on my iPad Pro using Procreate, which means no mess, no drying time, and nothing that makes venues nervous.
Is it just for big weddings?
Not at all. I offer three packages starting at £595 for smaller weddings of under 60 guests, scaling up to £995 for larger weddings of 100 or more - which includes a custom background designed specifically for your wedding. No templates, no off-the-shelf frames. Something made from scratch for your day (explore the options here).
If you're based in Scotland (or planning a Scottish wedding) I'm based near Stirling and cover the central belt and beyond.
The favour people actually keep
Every wedding I've ever been to has had favours. I can tell you how many of them I still have.
None.
Not one. Because miniature bottles of gin and personalised matchboxes are lovely in the moment but end up in the bin (or the junk drawer) a few days later.
An illustration of you, drawn on a day full of love and celebration, in the outfit you wore, surrounded by the people you love? That goes on a wall. That gets framed. That comes up in conversation years later when someone spots it and asks where it came from
That's the whole point. And let’s be real, who needs another miniature?
